What are motor-operated valves?

Motor Operated Valves (MOV) are essential components used in various industries such as petrochemical, refinery, power generation, and specifically in nuclear power plants. These valves play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficient operation of pipelines and transmission systems.

The primary function of MOVs is to control the flow of fluids by either fully opening or fully closing the valve. They are often referred to as On/Off valves because they have two extreme positions: fully open or fully closed. This allows for precise and immediate control of the pipeline flow.

MOV technology involves the integration of a motor and an actuator with the valve mechanism. The motor, typically electrically powered, drives the actuator, which in turn operates the valve. The actuator converts the rotational motion of the motor into linear motion, enabling the valve to open or close as required.

To control the MOVs, a control panel or control room is necessary. It provides the interface for operators to monitor and regulate the valve’s position and operation. Through the control panel, operators can send signals to the electric actuator, commanding it to open or close the valve, thereby controlling the fluid flow.

The use of Motor Operated Valves offers several advantages, including precise and rapid response, enhanced safety measures, and improved operational efficiency. By employing MOVs, industries can ensure effective control over their pipelines and transmission systems, contributing to overall safety, reliability, and productivity.
